So when you have heaps of thin clients which can only talk windows protocols like rdp, what happens when your windows infrustructure goes on the fritz ?

We discovered that a simple Ubuntu server running xrdp could do the job.

It wasnt perfect, but it got them going. A terminal to the ERP system and access to email via webmail is better than a blank screen.

With modern ubuntu its as easy as:

  • sudo apt-get install xrdp xfce4
  • for each user: echo "xfce4-session" > ~/.xsession
  • sudo service xrdp restart
